Florida Times-Union article on charter schools

A recent article in the Florida Times-Union truncated a response provided to them by Commissioner Robinson about charter schools, stating "Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said Tuesday the state application for opening charter schools doesn't need to address performance." The Commissioner was responding to the details about an application question for charter schools. To be clear, the Commissioner contends that performance of charter schools should be taken into consideration prior to any new charter school development because providing a quality learning environment for all students is paramount.

Also know that the Commissioner had a cordial conversation with the reporter and editor about the truncated comment, and informed them that DOE would post a note about it.

Therefore, the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services has provided a brochure designed to answer the following questions for parents:

  • My child needs help in school. Does my child have a disability?
  • What is RtI?
  • I have requested an evaluation for my child. Now what?
  • What is the evaluation going to include?
  • How will I know the results?

The direct link to the brochure is or you may access the brochure at Florida's Response to Instruction/Intervention Web site at under the RtI News section.
