Florida Public Charter Schools Grant Program

The Florida Public Charter Schools Grant Program is a competitive grant awarded to charter schools for planning, program design, and initial implementation of the charter school and for supporting the dissemination of successful practices and other information about charter schools.

Planning and Implementation: Florida Department of Education administers the Charter Schools Program (CSP) Planning and Implementation grant through a request for proposals (RFP) process. This competitive process is typically initiated in the fall (October) when the Department releases the RFP. Eligible applicants will have between 30-60 days to complete and submit the application. Each application is reviewed by five people and scored on a 100 point scale. The applications are then rank ordered from highest to lowest, with all applications scored below 70 ineligible for funding.

In order to be eligible to apply for a CSP sub-grant, the school must have an approved application with an authorizing agency (school district or University), and must meet the federal definition of charter school found in section 5210 of the ESEA.

An eligible applicant that receives a sub-grant may use the funds only for post-award planning and design of the education program of a charter school. It may carry out such activities as the refinement of the desired education results, the refinement of the methods for measuring progress toward achieving those results, and the initial implementation of the charter school. Implementation may include informing the community about the charter school and acquiring necessary equipment, materials, and supplies. Other eligible operational costs that cannot be met by state and local sources also may be covered.

The number of schools that receive an award is based on the amount of funding available. Florida anticipates awarding funds to approximately 50 schools per cycle. Historically, the average award amount is approximately $300,000.

A Request for Proposal for the 2010-13 grant cycle has been released. Please visit 2010-13 Planning & Implementation for more information

Dissemination: Charter Schools in operation for at least three years who have not previously received a dissemination grant may be eligible to apply. Additional eligibility criteria may be established by the Department and may vary with each application cycle.

The deadline for the 2009 Dissemination Grant has passed.
