Charter School Applicant Training

New Applicant Training

2011 New Applicant Training Update:

Legislation was recently passed that now requires charter school applicants to participate in training after approval of an application (Senate Bill 1546). Charter school applicants are no longer required to participate in training before submitting an application, and all scheduled new applicant trainings this summer have been cancelled.

To assist charter school developers in the meantime, the Department hosted a New Applicant Orientation webinar on July 7, 2011. If you missed the webinar, click here to access the recording.

Finally, the Department will reschedule post-approval trainings after the application deadline and provide ample notice to approved applicants.

Please contact tera.teders@fldoe.org if you have any questions.

Application Submission

Charter school applications are due to the sponsor (school district) by August 1 of each calendar year for charter schools to be opened at the beginning of the school district's next school year, or to be opened at a time agreed to by the applicant and the sponsor.

We recommend contacting the school district for specific application requirements.

In addition, section 1002.33(6), F.S., requires charter school applicants to submit an application on a model application form developed by the Department. The sponsor must then review the application using the evaluation instrument also developed by the Department. If approved, the sponsor will present a contract for negotiation using the model contract format.

Appeals

Section 1002.33(6)(c), F.S., provides that a charter school applicant may appeal any denial of that applicant's application or failure to act on an application to the State Board of Education no later than 30 calendar days after receipt of the sponsor's decision or failure to act and shall notify the sponsor of its appeal.

State Board Rule 6A-6.0781, F.A.C., establishes procedures for appealing a district school board decision to deny an application for a charter school.
