Charter School Applicant Training

New Applicant Training

Section 1002.33(6)(g), F.S., requires charter school applicants to participate in training provided by the Department of Education before filing an application. However, the school district (sponsor) may require applicants to attend training provided by the sponsor in lieu of the Department's training. We recommend applicants verify school district requirements prior to participating in the Department's training.

Applicant training for the 2009 application cycle is complete. Please check back in May 2010.

Application Submission

Charter school applications are due to the sponsor (school district) by August 1 of each calendar year for charter schools to be opened at the beginning of the school district's next school year, or to be opened at a time agreed to by the applicant and the sponsor.

We recommend contacting the school district for specific application requirements.

In addition, section 1002.33(6), F.S., requires charter school applicants to submit an application on a model application form developed by the Department. The sponsor must then review the application using the evaluation instrument also developed by the Department.

Appeals

Section 1002.33(6)(c), F.S., provides that a charter school applicant may appeal any denial of that applicant's application or failure to act on an application to the State Board of Education no later than 30 calendar days after receipt of the sponsor's decision or failure to act and shall notify the sponsor of its appeal.

State Board Rule 6A-6.0781, F.A.C., establishes procedures for appealing a district school board decision to deny an application for a charter school.
